Our Hawaiian Vacation: The Beginning II

We landed in relatively high spirits and surprisingly awake. For me it could have been the 2 Four Hour Energy shots I had during the flight. For Matt, I have no idea how he can functions at all considering he never drinks caffeinated beverages. I have always been a caffeine lover. Even as a child I would happily chew on roasted coffee beans, and coffee flavored yogurt was my favorite.

We gathered our luggage, caught the shuttle to Hertz, got our car and headed out for our hotel located in Po'ipu Beach on the southern side of the island.

The drive was one of the most beautiful we had ever taken. The lush greenery enveloped our tiny rental car, transporting us to a land time had forgotten. Matt leaned forward to peer through the windshield, allowing himself to take in the full glory of the densely forested mountains looming in the distance, the tropical jungle growing directly alongside the two lane highway, which I'm sure would have quickly overtaken it without constant maintenance, and said, "It looks like Jurassic Park."

Fun Fact: Jurassic Park was filmed on Kauai'i.

Our Hawaiian Vacation: The Beginning

For 10 days in the month of July, Matt and I had our first grownup vacation, just the two of us, on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai'i.

SFO at Sun Rise
Our day began early, as we had to catch a 7am flight. Since the BART didn't start running early enough to give us wiggle room with the 2hr preflight check-in, we called a cab to chariot us to SFO. Our cabbie was of East African descent, and was calm as cabbies go, he didn't use his horn but a few times as he flew though the traffic, gliding easily off the freeway towards United Airlines. He helped us with our luggage, and imparted a pocket sized religious book on the meditation of HU which we imparted to a vacant seat in the empty airport.

The flight wasn't too bad. I tired get some much needed reading in, but Joseph Heller proceeded to beat me about the head soundly with his Catch-22 antics. I ended up trying to sleep for most of the five hour flight.
